Embrace Creativity in HR: John Desimone’s Success Story
HR is not often a fun or glamorous role. Beyond answering never-ending employee questions and dealing with the world of ‘quiet quitting’, ‘great resignation’ and the ‘great reshuffle’, you can feel a little like a hamster on wheel of mundane tasks & duties.
But – by taking a step back to think creatively and offering a unique benefit, perk or wellness incentive that supports your people and promotes a positive employee experience, you can reinvigorate yourself AND the employees you serve.
John Desimone, Director of Human Resources at Henderson Brothers, Inc., a leading brokerage based in Pittsburgh, PA, shared an example of how creative thinking helped them reach their strong recruiting, growth, and retention goals. Earning them a consistent spot in Pittsburgh Post Gazette’s ‘Top Workplace’ award over the past decade.
“Four years ago, less than 5% of companies were offering Student Loan relief. We thought that offering this may be a great benefit for our employees, as well as serve as an attraction and retention tool. The decision to move forward with this benefit was a gamble, it was a risk. In 2018 we did it and have had a very positive response. Even with all the turmoil over the past three years, we have maintained a 94% retention rate.”
His advice?
“To move from a good culture to a great one, you have to be creative. Be quirky! To move the needle, you have to get outside the box, whether it’s through wellness, or additional perks you can offer.”
