Addressing Mental Health in the Workplace: National Mental Health Awareness Month
May is National Mental Health Awareness month, and it’s more important than ever to address mental health in the workplace.
There are many stats that show the profound impact the COVID-19 pandemic has had on mental health. New data is showing that the effects of the pandemic remain a major concern, and many in the workplace continue to struggle.
- 41% of Americans report an adverse mental health condition, up from 11% in 2019, according to a recent study released by the Kaiser Family Foundation,
- The CDC projects an increase of 50% in prevalence of mental health and substance use disorder in the first 12 months post-onset of the COVID-19 pandemic.
To be a successful organization, it is no longer just ‘nice to have’ policies and programs that support and improve employees’ mental health, it is necessary for long-term success. Employers need to address the mental health needs to have a successful workplace.
The World Health Organization recently released data showing a 4.25 X return on investment when organizations treat depression and anxiety.
Additionally, according to a recent McKinsey & Company survey,
- 59% Gen Z respondents are more likely to view mental health resources as critical for selecting an employer, versus 36% of Baby Boomers.
- 57% of Gen Z respondents are more likely to stay at their employer if mental health resources are offered, versus 31% of Baby Boomers.
Providing mental health resources in the workplace boosts employee productivity, job satisfaction and overall well-being.
There is a currently a disconnect between how employers feel about the level of support they offer for mental health, versus how employees feel about access to services and workplace stigma.
78% of employees report that improving their health and wellbeing is a high priority, while also reporting that they wish their employers would offer more health and wellbeing services.
Employers can do more to support workplace mental health. Organizations can create a culture that promotes productivity, happiness, and overall well-being. Helping employees be more resilient, productive, and less stressed.
